POETRY AT THE PUBLIC HOUSE

To Laura

The room is full of people, lovely people,
who seem to hang from every word we say.
The air is full of verse, or sometimes music,
and impregnated with a sense of spell.

Our time appears suspended for an evening,
while English words of rivers freely flow,
then turn into Italian, down new rivers;
but you, you waft away over the Thames.

I find it hard to concentrate on doing
what I am, after all, here to do (my poetry)
while you, a Muse, are sitting here, so close,
beautiful, as ever – magnificent and more!

HALLUCINATORY TELEPHONY

I walk around this city,
now suddenly inhabited
by phones, instead of people.

I see them at street corners,
I see them at road ends;
I see them where they are,
and even where they’re not!

A drunk may dream of bottles,
but I see only telephones –
the bottles for themselves,
but phones my means to you!

OVERSIZE EXUPÉRYAN PRINCE

You are a rose, lost in the desert,
perhaps under some palm trees
of a tiny, forlorn, forgotten oasis.
Someone, surely, should rescue you,
and do it a.s.a.p. (as soon as possible),
for the longer you will be left there,
the higher the risk that you’ll perish!
But I am too old and too big, to be
that all-magical, mythical prince
that was born of a crash in the desert,
that dear boy with a spirit so selfless,
to sacrifice all for the good of a flower,
to give it all up for the love of a rose …

RIGHTFUL INDIGNATION (AND JUSTIFIABLE FORCE)

You are like a princess in a fairy tale,
unlawfully imprisoned in a dismal life
that should never be the existence of one
so very lovely, tender, loving creature!
And I feel like that strong, mighty knight
that can save you from all those unnatural,
cruel, forced, compulsory surroundings.
To take you far away, to a life unknown,
but full of joy, of sunsets without sorrow,
of mornings without pain – but only smiles.
Yet I would need to come forcibly to take
you from their clutches, maybe with tanks
and helicopters and every modern weapon
of destruction, only rightfully used here,
my Love – in your case alone – for a just cause!

SAILING SEPARATE SEAS

For Lisa

Today I felt in my nostrils
the powerful smell of the sea,
but, sweetheart, it wasn’t that sea
where we both strolled together,
along dimly-lit beaches of hope,
where for instants I dreamed that
you could be the whole universe –
and nothing more beautiful, ever!

Today that same sea takes me far,
oh! so very distantly far from you,
like a new mermaid that lures me
towards unknown, remote, dangerous
waters, or uncharted dunes in the desert,
where a final destiny – an end-of-the-line –
impatiently ambushes impossible dreams…
